Almog Sharvit Plays his Jetstream 5 with Sunny Jain’s Wild East on NPR’s Tiny Desk

It was so awesome to see Almog Sharvit play his Jetstream 5 with Sunny Jain’s Wild East on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert. That band kills and Almog was on fire.

From NPR: From the very first note, Sunny Jain’s music promotes the idea of not just crossing boundaries but obliterating them all together. The percussionist, composer and bandleader has roots in South Asia and his band and album Wild Wild East are expertly adept at infusing the sounds and melodies of that part of the world into an intense yet joyful performance. There are references to his parents’ journey to the U.S., Sufi dance music and the mash-up of Bollywood and the Italian westerns of the 1960s.

Sunny Jain’s latest musical exploration is another road taken from his days leading the Brooklyn bhangra band Red Baraat (which did an explosive Tiny Desk concert in 2017) and if you listen closely you’ll hear how unique his musical vision is. In fact, if his musical projects were actual travel junkets, I would whip out my passport and jump on board as soon as I could.

Almog’s Jetstream 5

About Almog:

Almog Sharvit is a bassist and composer based in Brooklyn, NY. He creates surreal, maximalist compositions that combine both acoustic and electronic textures. In New York, Almog has established himself as a creative force: his collective trio KADAWA with Tal Yahalom (guitar) and Ben Silashi (drums) has received accolades and features from The New York Times, All About Jazz, Indiecurrent, and the Vancouver Sun among others.

KADAWA has toured internationally across Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, UK, and Israel: the band released its debut album in 2017, and has since collaborated with Grey McMurray, John Escreet, Jon Irabagon, and Adam O’Farrill, while working on the production of their 2nd album, which is slated for release in 2022.

Almog’s debut album as a leader “Get up or Cry” is out now on Unit Records (Switzerland). The album blurs electronic music, psychedelic rock, bluegrass, 20th-century classical music, and jazz into dizzyingly beautiful, wholly unique songs. “Get Up Or Cry” was recorded in a single day at Wonderpark Studios in Brooklyn. In post-production, Sharvit applied experimental techniques usually found in pop and electronic music to the songs – the record features filter sweeps, heavy distortion and compression, and creative automation and panning that he gladly says “will knock the dust off your stereo.”

Almog performs around New York in venues such as Rockwood Music Hall, Nublu, Blue Note, The Lincoln Center, Bar Next Door, and Fat Cat. With KADAWA, he has toured and performed at international festivals such as The Detroit Jazz Festival (USA), Jazz Werkstatt, Bern Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Jazzmeile Thüringen (Germany) & The Red Sea Jazz Festival (Israel).
